It seems unbelievable now that as Holly and I walked back from school that day we were actually talking about how boring our family was. Our parents were still together, apparently neither happy nor unhappy, both leaving for work at eight every morning, never home later than six. Our house looked like something out of an advert, with its neutral colours, plump cushions, clear surfaces, and sparkling kitchen floor.

"Perhaps Mum and Dad are really robots," joked Holly. "Maybe they have instructions from their alien masters to make sure that we turn out like automatons too."

She started walking in a jerky way, and I was laughing, but we both stopped as soon as we turned the corner into our street. There were two police cars and a television news van parked untidily outside our gate. I felt a hand on my shoulder, and an unfamiliar voice said, "Don't go home."

It was a man covered entirely in a black business suit who had an FBI badge pinned to his shirt.

He was a tall, middle aged man who looked very serious. I jumped out of his reach, looked at the house being swarmed by people who were also in black suits. I panicked as the man went to grab me again. We started running…

Holly and I ran away and we ended up in an alley. We were so quiet that we could hear footsteps coming towards us, So we ran again as fast as we could until we were out of breathe. The FBI were behind us and we ran into a different alley but there was a wall blocking us from the other side so there was no where to run so we stopped. Suddenly I thought are they working for the FBI or are they something else….

The men in black suits surrounded us in the ghostly alleyway corner, we had no means of escaping. We were trapped!

“Who are you? Why are you following us?” Holly shouted, panicked.

“We are the FBI, you need to know the truth!” One of the men stood forward and explained, “Your parents are not who they say they are, they are criminals! Not only criminals, they have a false identity as your real parents have been murdered. I’m so sorry.”

What. I thought.
How.
I never got to see my own parents.
They have been murdered…
I don’t know what to feel, as I never knew them…

Holly and I had our mouths open, our faces white as chalk.

“H-h-how?” I asked, in confusion.

“How they were murdered? Well, your fake parents worked for your real parents. But they stole all of their money they could find from their mining business. Which was a lot. They were found out, sacked and had to give the money back but weren’t put into jail because your parents were kind enough to drop their jail sentences. Your fake parents wanted revenge since they were sacked from a good paying job and they became broke. They captured your real parents- who were called Joseph and Hanna- and tortured (we don’t know how, yet) for seven days and then finally put out of their misery… Since you are only 13 we don’t want to share the rest of the horrific details until you’re 18, it’s the law.”

I closed my eyes and ran into the fading light of the winter evening…

The caws of wildlife awaken me as I see the canopy of leaves above me. I suddenly become aware of how alone I am. Where’s Holly? I frantically searched for any trace of her presence, but it was quickly clear that I did not have company. I hurriedly decided it was best I confront the people who I’d been calling my parents all my life.

The walk seemed never-ending; I didn’t know how far I’d travelled. The mysterious man’s voice echoed in my head. Why didn’t he want me to go home? I needed to find out answers, so I stumbled up my drive and into my now unfamiliar home.

I tentatively stepped through the threshold; it was deathly silent and the cool draft sent shivers up my spine.

Ostensibly, everything looked normal, but as I approached the kitchen it became clear that the house had been stripped bare. I shouted for Holly. Where had my whole life gone?

What if the FBI are fake? Was Holly being lied to? Holly looked strangely at her parents. She wanted to know the truth once and for all. “Mum, what is going on?” Silence…
“Whatever they said is not true. We are not your fake parents. We are your real parents “.
Holly felt like just running away forever and never coming back. She didnt’t know who her real parents were anyway. She burst into tears and ran out of the house slamming the door behind her. Outside the FBI were still there. “Holly, come with us and we will show you your real parents”. She could hear her Mum shouting not to go but Holly paid no attention at all…she just ran.

She felt the whistling wind push back her hair as a bead of sweat fell down the side of her face. She was exhausted, her breath wheezy, her muscles aching but she did not stop. She turned a corner running into the woods. As she saw the autumn leaves begin to fall onto the beaten path, her head was suddenly flooded with thoughts and questions. The voices of the parents that she had known all her life contrasting against the words of the suited men echoed around her mind. It all became too much as she stumbled along the river edge and her legs finally gave out. Unconscious and alone in a bed of rotten leaves, darkness crawled across the sky.

Holly was in the lush green lawn of an unfamiliar house.  She was sitting on a picnic blanket across from two strangers.  She knew she had seen them before, but there was some type of love between them.  Holly awoke in the decrepit, abandoned farmhouse.  She recognized the women from the dream, sitting in a corner with a start.  She saw that it was her real mom!  Her mother explained gently that she and her father had been kidnapped and tortured but not murdered.  They traveled thousands of miles to find Holly and her brother, Alex, but they had not reached him yet.  Holly sat up and prepared for the search of her brother.  Holly had finally found her real parents.
