    Ashcroft High school.

8.00 a.m. Monday morning. My first day. Eek.

Mrs Baldwin, my new form teacher, is the first person I meet. She comes sweeping down a corridor towards me and Dad, and I don't mind telling you that the first sight of her scares me half to death. Her chin is so pointy it reminds me of the wicked witch of the west.

Striding up, she ignores Dad completely for a second and peers hard into my eyes. Then, whatever she sees there, her faces softens completely, and she says in the most welcoming voice I’ve ever heard from a teacher ...

“Jasmine, it’s nice to finally meet you!”  She flashes a smile, “Would you like to come see the class?”  I turned to look at Dad only to see him walking out the door.  I looked back at Mrs. Baldwin, nodding.  “Sure.”  She grinned, “Great!  This way.”  She placed her hand on my shoulder, guiding me down the stairs.  After walking for a while, I noticed the walls were windowless and were stained with faded red splotches.  I cast Mrs. Baldwin a curious glance, but her eyes were emotionless as she tightened her grip on my shoulder…

I felt this cold chill shooting right down my spine.I couldn’t help but shiver. My thoughts trailed off back to that most terrifying dream… I saw flashes… flashes of these windowless, stained walls, red blood dripping slowly down the uneven surface. Flashes of children, students perhaps? crying for mercy; for their lives and then the ultimate, the door. A door as black as night and so rusty and crumbled that it was as if it would fall into dust any second. Though it was black, it had red splotches all over and I heard the most nightmarish screams. My breath froze within me as I approached the door… “OUCH” I winced as I was yanked back to reality. I realized that Mrs. Baldwin was still gripping my shoulder. She was staring and grinning at me as she purred: “You are gonna love this room right here”...

“Why? Where are you taking me? What are you going to do to me?” I was quivering as cold as the  Antarctic. I stared at the ground, not wanting to make eye contact, but soon I knew I would have to.  She noticed that the cold-blooded hand had slowly drifted off her shoulder and it slapped against Mrs. Baldwin’s waist. I looked up gradually and she had faced away, I didn’t know what to do, try and run away, stay. I turned around and couldn't see a door, I screamed and suddenly a man came barging in….

She threw me into the coldest and darkest room I can imagine. The closet filled with corpses that are all packed together in a small space. I heard Mrs Baldwin lock the door behind her and mumble something as she walked away. “ But I haven’t done anything!” I shrieked pushing and shoving the door as hard as I could but it was no use. I sat down and felt around for a way out. I found nothing until the wall behind me slowly disappeared and I fell through blackness. It felt like I was falling for ages, hours even, but it was only a minute or so. When I had stopped falling and had steadied myself, I looked around and saw…

A man that had a pistol in his hand. He told me to be quiet or he would shoot me.  I felt terrified and threatened. I said ‘put the gun down you don’t have to do this’.  There was not very much light. There are only a few candles. I said ‘where am I’. I was thinking how to escape from this place but there was  no way out. A few moments later the man moved towards me when suddenly a breeze blew through the room and the candles went out. All I could hear were the footsteps of rats

While the rats were scampering frantically, they were carrying a smell that was quite otherworldly. The stench was unbearable and taster quite bitter, but…my eyes, started to burn and my vision started to fade rapidly. Too many questions were clouding my mind. The temperature in the room shifted drastically, has winter come early?
I screamed for help, no reply. I tried a number of times; all failing… nearly all hope was lost. I shouted just one more time, and to my utter surprise, a door opened behind me, allowing golden light to flow into the nightmarish room. The rhythmic footsteps echoed through my eardrums, horror filled inside me. A bullet was heard entering the chamber of a pistol; no doubt it would enter my flesh in a matter of minutes. I thought what my life was going to become after this horrific episode. Either dead or severely injured. Why me… what do they want from me... and then he enters.

I was frightened. I did not know what to do. Already I felt the bullet ripping through my skin, pain exploding into my nerves. I was terrified. There was no point screaming because no-one could hear me. I didn’t know what to do. I was starting to get dizzy and the rats started nibbling on my toes it felt good at the start but now it feel that pins are going straight through my foot. I fell to the ground and I smacked my head off a post. I felt like there’s no hope I just want him to shoot me…..

The man stepped in front of me and said ‘Weg niet me je eens zeggen!’. Wait I recognise what he saying ‘Away don’t make me tell you again’ My memories take me back to when I was five, Me, my mom, my Dad and my brother went on a family trip to Holland before the accident that killed my mom. This brings a tear to my eye which brings concern to the man. ‘ Right listen up’ Suddenly out of the shadows of the walls appear figures of children, I didn’t notice anyone else when I was first brought into the room, some of these children look malnourished, dirty as if they have been here for weeks, but I do not recognise any of them. There have been no reports of missing children. ‘ Don’t try to escape, I will know what you’re planning before you attempt it’. Suddenly there is a glimpse of light as Mrs Baldwin enters the room and then I see him, not the man that is holding us hostage but a monster, twisted face, long nails, and devilish eyes that could turn the most innocent of souls black, then nothing, we are all alone. Out of the corner of my eye I see this one boy, he is not that much older than me and is dressed like something out of the Victorian era. That’s when I realise the legends of children that disappear out of thin air never to be seen human again and the town devil that disguises among the living building up there empire from the recently departed, is all true and I am about to become one of them, well not if I could help it anyway....

"GAH!" I scream as I wake up from the horrific nightmare."Oh, it was just a dream,' I say to myself. I look as the time and realize it is 8 o' clock. It was the first day of school and I was about to be late. I hurry to the bathroom to brush my hair. Once I was in the bathroom I picked up the hairbrush and looked in the mirror. at the sight of myself I dropped the hairbrush. I saw a shadowy figure with white eyes wearing old rags. I was confused for a second and then realized, I was, one of them...
