The Ballad of the Boat
She took her oars inside the boat,
And set sail from the shore.
She said goodbye to all she knew,
To what she’d see no more.
She rowed a while into the night,
Then paused to tell the moon:
‘I will not stop until I find
My future – hope it’s soon.’

· A ballad is a poem that tells a story
· Each stanza is a quatrain – four lines
· Lines one and three have eight syllables – they don’t rhyme
· Lines two and four have six syllables – they do rhyme
· Mine is written in the past tense
The whistling wind wisped through her hair,
Waves crashed against the boat.
The salty sea air struck her face,
A chill crawled down her coat.
The rays of sun beamed through the clouds,
A new day has begun.
To where would these waters lead her?
Her destiny has come.

She put her hand above her head
As her face filled with emotion.
Then she glanced into the distance,
As her boat sailed along the ocean.
She lay her feet among the sand,
As the sea surrounded her feet.
She trailed her feet up the beach,
And stopped to enjoy the warm heat.

The stormy sea crashed against the deadly shaped rocks.
Into the blurry distance a tornado was forming quickly
Crashing into houses and community centres, weakening and destroying everything in its path
As the stinging wind passed through the woman's hair, she jumped into a shaking boat
praying with tears in her eyes that she would see her family again.

she wanted only to be free
a sting of tears down cheeks
a desire to never want
to find but not to seek

I don’t know what to think,
I don’t know what links,
The memories of my childhood,
Are passing by, like the pages of a book.
