It was a humdrum Saturday morning. On the low wall between the shops sat Sean, the too-big leather jacket making him look smaller than he really was. Slightly odd. Odder still because the two friends either side of him were both rake-thin boys with small, pinched faces. Not friends really, but they always seemed to hang around with him, sitting there, saying nothing.

No words had yet been spoken. Sean had been there on his own and the two of them drifted in, hands in pockets, coming to a standstill either side of him, eventually both sitting down on the wall.

It was a warm day. No need for a jacket really. Pete and Paul were just in t-shirts and jeans.

Fly away Peter, fly away Paul, thought Sean, but he didn’t say it. He just stared ahead. They were comforting.

And that’s when it started.

The Mahoney brothers arrived.

“You got the stuff?” jeered the Mahoney brothers.
“S-sure,” cowered Sean. He deliberately reached into his small jacket pocket, knowing what was coming. The day itself had been as melancholy as ever. Deaths, drugs and crime littered the bright sun’s rays. Peter stalled for time:
“Er, why don’t we go somewhere else?” he nervously laughed.
“So, you can’t make the exchange?” growled one of the Mahoney brothers. Time slowed- Sean watched as one of the brothers eyes clung to the object in his hand. He watched slowly as the gun slid smoothly out of one of the Mahoney brother’s pockets, its intricate design glinting in the sun’s vivid light. A word echoed…
“Bye.” Sean snapped out of the trance – sped to the fluorescent red Ferrari and slammed on the gas. But then… Dubai English Speaking College

A petrified look slithered across Sean’s face, as he realised what lay ahead. A cloud of smoke accompanied by the shot of a gun pierced the still air. Sean stood there, waiting for the end to come. Instead, the youngest of the Mahoney brothers collapsed on the cold tarmac into a never-ending sleep. Glancing round, the eldest’s eyes narrowed in a fixed glare that focused on a vanishing Lamborghini that neared the distant horizon. He turned to face Sean again. “ I’ll be back. I promise. I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” he murmured through gritted teeth.

“Wait, this is not going to end like this. He just killed our brother. We have to stay and fight.” said the middle brother. The older brother sat in thought for a moment, then pulled out his gun and said, “Yeah lets get him.” The oldest brother shoved Sean on the ground; holding the gun to his head. “Wait I didn’t shoot your brother,” said Sean “Well who did?” “I have no idea who shot your brother. I was just trying to run away so you wouldn’t shoot me! I’ll give you anything, just don’t shoot me!” he Mahoney brothers though about this. “Give me the stuff, or this gun might accidently come off of safety.” said the older brother. Sean locked eyes with Peter and Paul huddled in the corner, and decided that this was the right thing to do. Sean slipped the brown package out of his jacket pocket and handed it to the brother. The Mahoney brothers unwrapped the package and stared down in disbelief at the limited edition, 1965, peace around the world care bear.

I'd just like to say thanks to the Write Pathers who worked on my story opening. I was really impressed with what you all came up with - you are great young writers and you must keep it up. Just to let you know, this was a story that I began writing in a workshop I ran at Hipperholme Grammar School back in April. Like all writers, I start a lot of things that never get finished, but I'm now really keen to finish this one! I already had some ideas, but maybe the shape of it will now be influenced by what you all came up with. I've inspired you and you've inspired me, so well done! When the real thing is finished, I'll post it back here for you all to read.
