Freedom House

I am housed in dreary walls.
They glare at me each day, high windows and locked doors –
No way out.
I must stay in.
I do as I am told – I eat, sleep and do the job they gave me.
And if a door is unlocked, I make sure I come back.

Writing tips from Dave – follow the rules or break the rules – you’ll have a poem either way:
• This is a free verse poem, where you don’t have to count syllables, create rhymes or have standard line lengths
• Mine is written in the first person and the narrator appears to be trapped
• He or she seems to live inside this place, but it doesn’t feel like a home, it feels more like a prison

The path ahead
Is as clear as the night sky
I must stay trapped in these walls
I wish I knew why.

Chores all day long
No happy ever after
The looks on the doors
Suspend me from laughter.

As exciting as can be
Does not describe me
Bored all day long
Not even singing a song.

Dark walls trap me inside the gloom,
Food is stale and smells of mould,
Beds are hard and cold,
This is definitely not home,

The only sight of light,
Is from the only window,
In my prison cell,
The fire flicker giving no warmth,
To my frozen soul.

My soul is longing to be free,
From this dark, damp celler,
I hold it in trying to calm it,
Protect it,
From the path of doom.

Each day I remain in here
I start to feel more grim
Each second feels like an hour
As the day light starts to dim

I hate this place
I long to leave
But I'm only free
in my dreams

My life is such a mess
Where did I go wrong?
I feel like I'm snapped in two
This place is not familiar,
I make up a depressing song

I want to be free
They keep upsetting me
I don’t know what I did wrong
I can’t even see
I’ve been in here to long

Every time I lie down
It always makes me frown
They get me up and take me outside
And make me do exercise

I can still hear the voices,
How do I make the choices?
They just need to stop,
Or I’m just going to top.

They’re telling me this,
They’re telling me that,
It’s like death’s kiss,
I just want to lie down flat.

I can see the daylight
Through the narrow stone window
I wish I could fight
My way through the bars.

The darkness is beginning,
To overpower me
I can hear voices in my head
Why can they not hear my plea?

I’ve signed my life away
I have thrown myself too deep
Now I closed my dreary eyes
For a very restless sleep.

Wow! I'm so impressed with what you all came up with - deeply thoughtful and some very fine word choices. Well done everyone.
