Friday Story 2 - Tim Bowler

Getting rid of the body was the easy part. It was just a question of heaving it over the edge and down into the shaft. There was a heavy silence, followed by a muffled thud somewhere far below them, then nothing. Just darkness and the sound of their breathing. They straightened up, looked at each other, then at him. He said nothing. He simply watched them back, studying their faces one by one. They'd done well so far, better than he'd expected, but he knew the toughest part was yet to come. Cleaning clothes, finding a way back that avoided being seen, planning what to say. There would be questions, lots of questions, and he'd have to make sure their answers matched. He went on studying the faces in the darkness. Perhaps it was as well that they were afraid of him.

“What are you all staring at?” His voice was as sharp as daggers.
The breathing continued.
“Answer me then!” His yell broke the silence and murmurs came from the crowd.
“Why couldn’t we just confess? I mean, we could have kept the b-b-body,” the young boy’s voice stuttered over the word “if we had just confessed we wouldn’t have to be here right now! I mean...”
“What are you talking about?!” The leader interrupted, “Why are you saying this now? You have committed to this, if you don’t like it then you know there is only one way out...”
The murmurs in the darkness grew quiet at the warning, as they were all reminded of the punishment for talking to other people about the body...
The leader was not a good man but he still didn’t enjoy giving death threats to people here and there, perspiration seeped down his forehead at the thought.
“We need to go,” His voice was barely audible “We have to be out of here by sunlight, or we’ll be seen.”
Everyone knew what would have to be done and the silence became piercing.
“Stop complaining... And grab a shovel...”

I picked up the shovel I was shaking with fear; the others had gone I was in this on my own. I had no idea where they were they just ran. I had never done anything like this before. It was gruesome and disgusting; I saw the thick red blood trickle down the big black sack he was contained in, the sack had a hole in it in which you could see the knife wound. All of my nerves started to open and scatter to the rest of my body who, what, where, when and how did this happen? Why did we get into this situation? Then I saw a flashlight scared we ran, leaving the body behind in the moonlight that shone in between the gloomy trees. I ran as fast as I could fleeing from tree to tree trying not to look back at the horror that will haunt me forever. The full moon was staring right at me telling me that something was going to happen to me in the future. The flashlight got closer and closer to the body that we had left abandoned. Then …

“Hello boys” came a play full, female voice from on top of a large oak tree. I started to sweat even more as I saw a black figure jump down from the tree. “What are you doing out so late?”, she turned the flash light back on to scan our faces. The leader smiled wickedly as he walked towards her knowing exactly what to do “oh my dear you made a big mistake coming here” he replied in his smooth as an oil slick voice. She tossed her long, black silky hair behind her shoulder purposely slapping the leader in his face and turned towards us “now” she spoke mysteriously “you really don’t want to be here to see this” she smiled sweetly and waved as we ran away. In the distance we could hear the yelps of the leader and the sound of scuffling in the bushes. “We should go back” the other boy whispered “I don’t feel right about this”. We turned back and saw...

...the mysterious woman heave our leader against the brick wall, making a
horrific crunch against the man's head. He cried out in agony and thick,
scarlet blood trickled from within his nose. Time seemed to stand still as
the woman's fist came up and connected with his chin. The woman cackled, a
hoarse raspy laugh that echoed off the very hills surrounding us and
backfired at us all.
"Please, I Don't have the money Veronica..." Our leader choked on what
sounded like his own blood.
"It's not the money I'm after" Veronica's voice was ice. "Tell me where
Tony is!"
"Tony?" Our leader's battered face changed. "I'll never tell you".
The look on her face could have curdled milk. Suddenly, a machete was
whipped from her jacket pocket and was plunged into the man's chest. A
muffled gasp escaped his throat. Everything happened in slow motion. My
heartbeat slowed, my head spun. An evil smile spread over Veronica's face
and she rammed the knife in further.
"Oh my God," I realised the girl was squeezing my hand.
"Why?"
Veronica turned, and spotted us, her eyes on fire.
"You two!" her irises re-ignited. "I thought I'd told you two to clear off!"
Her attention turned to the knife, which was gleaming under the soft
moonlight, and smiled, a vicous smile that tore through reality and into a
realm that made up pure evil.
"Run," I whispered.

I heard one of them whisper something that sounded like run but the other one shook his head, “Who’s Tony?” he asked, I groaned and shook my head and replied “ You don’t wanna know” why didn’t these boys run when I told them to? The boy got angry and ran towards his leader and wildly rummaged through his pocket pulling out a gun. I stepped back “Whoa kid, don’t do that, you really wanna know who this guy is fine I’ll tell you”. He lowered the gun a little. “He’s in charge of this group of assassins that guy,” I nodded to the leader “was his second in command” the other boy, who had whispered “run” looked confused. “S-so who are you?” he stuttered “I’m under cover, I was forced to kill your leader because wouldn’t co-operate” the gun lowered even more “look kid, I need help to find Tony and I really can do with your help you in?” They both nodded slowly “right then let’s get going” I led the way to my car and had almost reached it when.............

Veronica stepped out from the bushes at the edge of the forest. We all froze in surprise, our feet cemented to the ground.

“Hello boys,” She said once again in a voice as silky as honey, “As long as you co-operate and tell me were Tony is I wont kill you.” “I’m not telling you anything!” I shouted. Her rose-like lips spread into an evil grin. She lunged forward and grabbed Little Jimmy, the youngest of the group, in her vice-like grip. She placed her machete gently against his neck. A bead of blood ran down his throat. His hair ruffled in the breeze as the night grew colder. I panicked. Little Jimmy is like a brother to me, I couldn’t let anything happen to him. “Let him go and I’ll take you to Tony.” I pleaded. My thoughts were with Tony now, I dreaded what this Veronica woman would do to him.

Veronica shoved Little Jimmy to the ground and clasped my coat, she pulled me towards her. She said, “Get on now!”….

“Never” I croaked trying to remove her hand from my coat, she tightened her grip and threw me hard onto the ground next to little Jimmy. I had no idea on what I should do next; I could hear little Jimmy whining next to me. “Jimmy, if she points that machete anywhere near your face, stand up and run” I whispered, worried that if she heard me, I would definitely not make it out of here alive. “Oi! You, what did you say to him” She bellowed, placing her machete on my neck. I could feel my body freeze up, a tear trickled down my cheek I had to tell her a lie. “I told him that I… cared about him and nonsense like that…” How babyish had I just made myself look, I could feel the cold and jagged blade piercing my skin. Then out of nowhere…

Then out of nowhere, they heard dogs barking, leaves cracking, and sirens buzzing. Before the noticed, they were surrounded by cops. Veronica then ran to the escape van. Little Jimmy jumped into the back of the escape van. Suddenly, Jimmy said, "Go now." Then the leader ran in the opposite direction of them. He looked to the right as he was distraced by the shadow. He then felt a sharp pain in his left arm. He was dragged to the ground by a K-9. Meanwhile, Veronica and Little Jimmy were driving and they didn't notice the road spikes. POOF! Their tires were blown and they swerved into a swarm of cops and police cars. Their van suddenly exploded and killed the cops, Veronica, and Little Jimmy. Meanwhile, the leader was taken into custody. The officers of Louisiana had no evidence that there were other people involved in the crimes.
