Those of you that took part in WP last year have a real advantage here because you already know so please feel free to ignore this post! But for our newbies - I will work out a timetable for each day with a mix of UK and international schools and I will advise you of your time slot. Each school will have the set of stories for that day and the comic for a little over an hour and you can request to continue the video story if you wish also. If you do not want to work on the comic that's fine but if you do you will of course need access to a scanner so that your continuation can be passed on to the next school. Schools are encouraged to pass on the stories etc with a short video conference (probably using Skype is easiest) but if you cannot do this it's not a problem - it does add something for the pupils if you can however. Please let me know as soon as possible if your school will be using video conferencing - then I can build in more time for this. It would be great if we can amass as much video and photographic material from the day, it's great to look back on this afterwards. The last school on the timetable will be given a time extension as they will need to 'round off' the stories as they write the last paragraph. As stories are passed on I need to be copied in each time please then I can upload the stories to the ning and schools can see how they develop and prepare for their turn.

The students that take part each day will be asked to vote for their favourite paragraph of each of the stories they work on (and they are not allowed to vote for their own school ;0) ) so we will have one 'winning' school each day although I hope all the students participating will feel they have 'won' and will get a lot out of the day. Of the 5 day winners one overall winner will be chosen and they will receive medals for their students and a trophy which they keep for one year. I have arranged for the stories & comics to be printed in a book and each school will receive one copy of this book - you can order additional copies if required.

Phew.....thinks thats about it for now but any questions please just ask! Hope this helps make things a bit clearer.

Thank you Bev - that's a lot clearer and something I can take to the English teacher to explain what this is all about. We shall probably be able to Skype, but will let you know when teachers are back.

Can we have imput into our time slot? It would be easier in my school if I can schedule it for a double English lesson with Year 7's. I will get the It Manager on to it to ensure we can Skype!

Hi Nicola unfortunately it would be impossible to accomodate everyone in this way - by all means send me a hopeful time but I can't promise to keep to it because of the problems of juggling time zones etc. Sorry!

Hi Bev
Thanks for this - I hope the fact that we work on a Sunday to Thursday week will not throw too much of a spanner in the works? I am fairly confident that we will want to Skype, but the other difficulty is that I won't see the teachers until 14 September, and will only be able to confirm everything then. Hope we will be able to work around all this - thanks for all your hard work.

Of course we will Nerine - there's always a work around! Anyway sure it'll be all right on the night so to speak!

Yes, thanks for this information Bev, it helps those of us who are not completely sure what we are going to be doing! I am beginning to feel nervous as well as excited about it all... the event is creeping closer.
Possibly this has been mentioned already, but I'd like to know how schools select the children taking part- is it usually through their English departments? Another silly question that could be answered somewhere else is how many pupils should get involved - just a couple per story or do some schools actually involve the whole year group? Or, don't we know yet as it depends on how many authors there are taking part? I remember that the pupils involved are in Year 7 so we won't know them very well before October. Sorry if I've missed all this somewhere on the site and I should know it by now!

Hi Lynda please don't be nervous - it's going to be great fun. Schools choose their participants in different ways - through their English department in some cases or perhaps via a competition as we do in my school. All year 7s are invited to write the first paragraph of a story and we choose the top ten or so to take part. I would think the maximum you could involve would be 3 per story (and there will probably be 5 stories per day to work on) - involving the whole yeargroup would be unworkable I would think, and if the school should win the overall trophy I don't think we'd be able to run to hundreds of winners medals! I hope this helps but any more questions just ask - there's plenty of time.

Hi Bev,
Thanks for the information. It is slightly clearer, but still as clear as mud, but thats just because i have to get my head round things again after the holidays. We will hopefully be using Skype and also have access to a scanner. Thanks again. Cheryl

Hi Bev
A couple of queries before I fill in the information sheet - am I right in thinking that each school only participates on one day during the week? Also, is the video story the same as the Skype contact that is set up between participating schools?
Comment by WP Central on September 7, 2009 at 16:22
Ji Nerine yes you are quite right each school only takes part on on one day - although I must admit that my own school may participate more than this. The video story is a stand alone story - we thought it would be a good idea to allow pupils to contribute even if they are not good at writing things down so it is not the same as the Skype contact. Video continuations would need to be in avi format and still just 120 - 200 words long. Schools do not have to contribute to the video or to the comics, it just gives more options. I hope this helps look forward to recieving your sheet soon.
